Expanding your Skill Set – Tip 6 of 10

The job skills shortage isn’t going anywhere so here is this week’s tip that you can take to improve the probability of your career success.

Tip 6 of 10: Know which skills you want to promote and/or leverage and why.

Knowing what the employer is looking for is one thing, being able to convey your value on their terms is another. Chances are that there will be at least 10+ skills and attributes that any employer says are important and trying to cover all equally is a mistake.

If you are able to recognise which ones for you are learned behaviours – something you can do well, but don’t particularly enjoy; which ones are weaknesses – something you don’t enjoy and are not very good at; which are potential strengths – something you enjoy doing but the skill is not fully developed yet; and which ones are real strengths – something you enjoy doing and are good at; focus on the ones that are in the latter group and if you still have lots, focus on the top six.

Typically the latter ones are the ones that you want to leverage to demonstrate your value.

So, closing the skills gap divide might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
