Making that dream career change become a reality – Tip 9 of 10

We are capable of more than we imagine, so here is this week’s tip that you can take to significantly improve the probability of your career success and happiness.

Tip 9 of 10: Idea Feasibility

Having created a list based on appeal, now it’s about evaluating and comparing the viability of each to see which role(s) could become your next career move. Whilst appeal is still absolutely critical,

you must factor in viability and for this there are two considerations:

  1. As a candidate, in terms of my qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience, would I be seen as a viable/credible candidate?
  2. If I am credible, is the role going to be viable for me in terms of remuneration, work /life balance and expectations etc?

As you evaluate, focus on what the role entails over seniority, sector, location, renumeration etc as these are preferences and there will be compromises that you may need to make. You are looking to identify the best fit that takes into account your situation, circumstances and skill set.

Once you have done your initial evaluation, if the option still appeals, write a short paragraph describing what you’d actually be doing on a day-to-day basis; where you’d be doing it in terms of type of organisation / type of environment / which sector(s); and on what basis you would be paid. Repeat this activity for all the options that you are still considering.

Read through the descriptions and decide if you really know enough about each option to be able to make an informed decision as to whether or not to take a particular one forward as a potential candidate for your Career Search Objective. If not, before discarding the option, it is worth doing some further research.

Bonus Tip – Although it can be time consuming, nothing beats talking to an active practitioner, someone who is actually doing what you are considering as an option.

So, making that dream career become a reality might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
