Making your career dream a reality – Tip 8 of 10

We are capable of more than we imagine, so here is this week’s tip that you can take to significantly improve the probability of your career success and happiness.

Tip 8 of 10: Idea Creation

Having developed a thorough understanding of yourself and identified your transferable skills, you can then use that as a strong foundation to create your options long list.

When creating your long list, you deliberately do not want to be practical or pragmatic. The benefit of taking that approach is so that if there’s something at the back of your mind you think you might do, when you get there, you’ll see it as a series of positive decisions, not a default strategy.

The impact that you can create by saying this is what I want to do and I know why, as opposed to this is all I’ve ever done, so this is all I can do, is huge. So, no idea is a bad idea. If it excites you in any shape or form, get it on that list. Use the creative right-hand side of the brain to brainstorm and at this stage do not rule out any ideas, however wild or fanciful they may appear. Continue generating ideas until you feel you’ve dried up. It’s best to spread this exercise over two or three days.

If you know your MBTI profile and have your report, look at the list of popular occupations that it mentions and use that as a catalyst to get you considering those and others that immediately spring to mind.

NB in Myers-Briggs terms if you have a preference for Judging, resist the temptation to move too quickly to closure and give yourself sufficient time and licence to explore your range of options fully.

Bonus Tip – To generate additional ideas, you may find it helpful to think of people you know or have met who do the type of work that you find interesting. Think about jobs and types of work that you have thought about in the past – even back to your teenage years.

So, making that dream career become a reality might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
