Making your career dream a reality – Tip 6 of 10
We are capable of more than we imagine, so here is this week’s tip that you can take to significantly improve the probability of your career success and happiness.
Tip 6 of 10: Valuing Yourself as a Person
The ability to clearly recognise and value yourself as a person is important as it will (a) give you confidence and (b) help you to understand the type of environment and culture that is going to bring out the best in you.
A good place to start is to think about what your values and beliefs are and why you hold them, as the external manifestation of these are what others will see and judge you on.
Beliefs are firm thoughts or views that something is true or is going to happen. We hold beliefs about ourselves, about others and about the world around us. Our beliefs shape our perceptions and perspectives which ultimately shape our reality.
Values are the fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate us to act in a certain way. They help us to determine what is important to us and are the ends to which we act.
Attitudes are born from our beliefs and values and can include three components: cognitive, emotional and behavioural: i.e. Helen believes that office politics is unhealthy, feels angry when people do it and avoids being in environments where it is prevalent.
Personal traits are normally associated with a distinguishing quality or characteristic that we have and are usually expressed and seen by others through our behaviour which often is the external manifestation of our attitude. Examples – tenacity, drive, open mindedness, patience.
By understanding your values and beliefs it will allow you to adjust your attitude and modify your behaviour so that the traits that you want to be recognised and appreciated for are consistently seen, thereby reinforcing your personal brand.
Bonus Tip – Consider taking a psychometric test such as the Myers Briggs MBTI as this type of assessment can help you identify strengths and potential weaknesses of your type.
So, making that dream career become a reality might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
