The Good News About Interviews – Tip 8 of 10

Going to an interview can seem a daunting prospect, so here is this week’s tip that you can take to improve the probability of your career success.

Tip 8 of 10: Follow Up – Managing the Process – Reminding of the Fit

As soon as you get home, analyse how the interview went and write up what you have found out.

Your notes will include:

o          information about the company

o          the role

o          the people

o          next steps

o          your strengths and weaknesses as they relate to the position

o          their problem and how you are going to fix it

Ask yourself:

o          What went well?

o          What did not go well?

o          What was difficult?

o          What did I learn?

o          What is the next stage?

o          How can I follow up?

Write a follow up email/letter reiterating your interest in the position, and the strengths you feel you would bring to it as well as thanking the manager for the chance to discuss the issues they are facing.

If you don’t hear from them in the timescale indicated, get back in touch, either with the company direct or with the agency, depending on your relationship with each. If the agency is unhelpful or uncommunicative, ring the manager you saw or the HR contact.

If things seem to be dragging, for example because of delays in getting the decision-makers together or hold-ups over budget you can follow up again with a short summary of what you understand to be the main challenges of the role and your proposals for tackling them, based on your past experience. This will not only reinforce your suitability for the role but also remind them who you are.

So performing well in the interview might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
