Making your career dream a reality – Tip 7 of 10

We are capable of more than we imagine, so here is this week’s tip that you can take to significantly improve the probability of your career success and happiness.

Tip 7 of 10: Recognising your skill set as a product

The ability to clearly recognise and value your skill set as a product is incredibly important as it will allow you to articulate your value, thereby increasing your personal impact and credibility

Generally, there are two areas that you will want to consider (a) your soft transferable skills and (b) your hard/ technical transferable skills.

Soft Transferable Skills

Soft skills commonly relate to a person’s interpersonal skills; how we interact with others and navigate our environment. These skills are usually more innate and are harder to measure than hard skills. Examples – leadership, communication, empathy, teamwork, adaptability.

Hard / Technical Skills

Hard or technical skills generally are learned skills gained through either experience and or qualifications and training, then enhanced through practice and repetition. Hard skills are easier to measure than soft skills because they can be easily related to productivity and efficiency. Examples – accounting, data management, project management, copywriting.

By recognising your skill set you will then be able to develop and leverage your product brand as a solution to other people’s problems. You know people will judge you, but by taking control you can influence them on what judgements you want them to make.

Bonus Tip – Look back at your achievements, these are your successes, they reveal your transferable skills and provide the evidence to prove those skills. Go through them and collate all the skills (soft and hard) that you needed to achieve the outcomes. The ones that appear the most are probably ones that you would be looking to promote, especially if you enjoy using them.

So, making that dream career become a reality might not be as daunting as you first thought and may not require anything more than a fresh perspective and way of looking at it. It sounds simple and it is, it’s just not always easy, especially when trying to do it alone.
